Free service to stop unwanted telesales calls and junk mail

Bothered by unwanted telesales calls? Junk mail jamming your letterbox? Do you receive nuisance texts or e-mails that you have no interest in? Read on for help in stopping them.

TeleSales Calls

Unwanted telesales calls, to either your landline or mobile phone, are a huge cause of annoyance to consumers. The Telephone Preference Service exists for consumers to register their details as not wanting to receive these calls. It won't stop them completely, companies who you regularly do business with are still allowed to call you, but it will reduce them substantially. The TPS is free to register and you can register online at the link below. Beware of private companies who offer the same service but charge you a one-off or annual fee.

The Telephone Preference Service DMA House 70 Margaret Street London, W1W 8SS Telephone 0845 0700707 Website www.tpsonline.org.uk

It will take up to 28 days for telephone calls to be reduced. If within the 28 days you receive an unwanted telephone sales call, obtain an address for the caller and send a recorded delivery letter to the company to request that they stop telephoning you. Advise the company that any further calls from them will be reported to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).

If you continue to receive unwanted calls after 28 days, you can complain to the TPS, either by telephone or by visiting their web site, where you can complete a complaints form. TPS will then investigate the complaint. All complaints are then passed on to the Information Commissioner's Office at www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk who may decide to enforce the regulations.

Junk Mail

If you are forever wishing you could reduce receiving Junk Mail, then here are a couple of contacts.

The Mailing Preference Service Freepost 29 LON20771 London, W1E 0ZT Telephone 0845 7034599 Website www.mpsonline.org.uk

Royal Mail Door to Door Opt-Out Room 130 Wheatstone House Wheatstone Road Swindon, SN3 5JN

Allow at least four months before you see a reduction in the mail you receive. Put a notice in your window next to your letterbox stating that leaflets are not welcome.

Email and Text Message

Companies sending e-mail or text message adverts will now have to get permission of recipients first, under rules published by the Advertising Authority.

The new code of practice says explicit consent must now be given for marketing by e-mail or text message. Unsolicited e-mail advertisements (spam) must now also be clearly marked so recipients can see what it is before they open it.

If you wish to make a complaint about a particular advertisement including television and radio adverts, please provide brief details of your complaint in writing (enclosing a copy of the advertisement if possible to:

Advertising Standards Authority Mid City Place 71 High Holburn London, WC1V 6QT
